In Mosel, the manager of a hypermarket decided to remove from the shelves a bag of ultra-spicy chips that was the subject of a dangerous TikTok challenge. An update on this “Hot Chip Challenge” and its risks.
“Hot Token Challenge”. That’s the nickname of the new trendy TikTok challenge, which consists of keeping an ultra-spicy chip in your mouth for as long as possible. A game not very intelligent and yet popular with hundreds of young people.
Chips known to be the hottest in the world
First known as the “One Chip Challenge” among teenagers in the United States, this hugely popular Tiktok challenge quickly morphed into the “Hot Chip Challenge” in the European Union.
And for good reason: the challenge is to film yourself eating one of these chips sold as “the strongest in the world” (two peppers rated between 1.4 and 2.2 million on the Scoville scale are an integral part of the recipe).
If the game looks fun on paper, in the videos people who enjoy these Chios will quickly turn red. A “burn” that can last for many minutes… and end up in the hospital.
Dr. Magali Labadie, with whom our colleagues from France Info spoke, also warned of the risk of irritation, digestive disorders and even discomfort associated with the ingestion of these chips.
Several teenagers have already been hospitalized because of this spicy game.
For all these reasons, François Rodriguez, director of the Auchan hypermarket, decided to remove these chips from his shelves.
“It is a precautionary decision. I have teenagers at home and I could see the excitement it created. This is not something I approve of. I have a conscience, I’d rather fine the product than risk making customers sick“, confides the director, who also believes that these chips”I have no taste interest”.
Nevertheless, around sixty bags of chips were (already) sold in the supermarket “e.gabout ten days”specifies Le Républicain Lorrain.
NO to diets, YES to WW!
The Chip brand doesn’t seem concerned about potential side effects
For a brand that markets spicy chips, it seems to have little concern for the health of consumers.
It states on its website that the product is “safe and has no side effects“, before adding: “You may experience blurred vision, difficulty breathing, and sweating..”
The only people the brand considers “at risk”? Children and pregnant women who are advised not to eat said chips.
