Corticosteroid creams: higher risk of osteoporosis and fractures even at low doses

New research confirms that the use of topical corticosteroid creams, which are common in the treatment of dermatological conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, is associated with a higher risk of osteoporosis and related bone fractures.

We already told you about it in 2017: oral corticosteroids are associated with a higher risk of phlebitis, embolism, and bone fractures, even within one to three months. In the form of a cream, they are usually prescribed to treat eczema, psoriasis, some insect bites or itching. However, new research based on data from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance has shown that the more we increase the daily doses of corticosteroid cream, the more we increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

The risk of osteoporosis increased by 20 to 35% depending on the dose of the cream

Based on data from nearly 130,000 cases of osteoporosis and 35,000 cases of major osteoporotic fractures and their comparison with 519,000 and 140,000 controls who did not suffer from these pathologies, the researchers calculated that the risk of developing osteoporosis more than five years multiplied by 1.22 in case of low dose (0 to 2.5 grams of cream per day)by 1.26 in the case of an average dose (2.5 to 15 grams of cream per day) and 1.34 in the case of a high dose (more than 15 grams of cream per day).

O large bone fractures associated with osteoporosisthe risk is multiplied by 1.12 in the case of a low dose (from 0 to 2.5 grams of cream per day), 1.19 in the case of a medium dose (from 2.5 to 17 grams of cream per day) and 1.28 in the case of a high dose (more than 17 grams of cream per day).

Eczema: Think You’ve Tried Everything?

High dose = 3 tablespoons. coffee per day

Since a level teaspoon contains about 5 grams of cream, a low dose would correspond to a maximum of half a teaspoon of cream per day. AND high dose…
